Two cars hitting each other vs. one car hitting a wall?
Would the damage created by a head-on collision involving two cars going 100 mph equal the damage created by one car going 100 mph colliding with an immovable wall?
I meant to say the two cars are equal. Also, there are two seemingly correct answers! I wish a physicist (or someone else qualified) would confirm one.
I believe that the damage would be the same. Since the wall is immovable it creates a reaction force equal to that of the car hitting it. “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction” and in the case of the two cars the reaction force is also equal since the colliding car is going the same speed. So the wall is exerting as much force as a car going 100 mph.
