I’ve damaged someone elses car – where do I stand?
I scratched someone’s car quite deeply in a Sainsbury’s car park 2 weeks ago. I left my details on their windscreen and the owner texted me saying she would let me know how much it would be to get it repaired, but she has texted me again today saying she wants to go through insurance.
I would much rather sort it out between ourselves as I have a £400 excess and I’m sure it won’t be more than that, so I’ve left her a message asking her to call me about it. If I can’t persuade her otherwise and she goes through insurance where do I stand? Will my premiums go up because of a claim against me? Will I have a problem reporting this to my insurance company as it happened 2 weeks ago?
It’s out of your hands now – if she wants to go through the insurance, there’s nothing you can do. Your premium will go up because of this claim.
I know it’s too late, but you should NEVER leave your details on someone’s car if you hit them & they’re not on site – you have no idea of how honest THEY are & may use it as an excuse to claim for prior damage. Your note may also be taken by someone else who may claim for a car you’ve never even seen, let alone hit!
The correct procedure is to inform the local police and leave your details, as well as time, date, exact location and details of the other vehicle. If the owner then needs to find out who’s hit their car, they can do so through the correct channels & you’ll have a reliable record of what went on.
