How to make a solar charger?
I’m trying to make a solar charger for when I go on camping trips. I know you can buy them, but they’re about $70, and I just purchased about 8 cells for $25. I plan on wiring them in parallel/series to get the desired voltage and amperage, but I have a few questions.
1.) One source I found said that if it was below 5v or so I wouldn’t need an overcharge protector. I’m not sure why. Is that true, or would I need one? I definately don’t want to overcharge my batteries.
2.) Do I need to match volts/amps? I know that some chargers can charge batteries faster. Do they do this by increasing the amperage? What is a safe amount?
3.) Do I need a diode or rectifier to ensure current only flows one way?
I plan on charging 4 AA batteries, so what do I need to look for? I would also like the ability to charge my GPS directly, but since it has different power requirements than the 4AA batteries would I need to just pick one or the other? Any help would be apprecated. Thanks!
4 AA’s is about 5-6 volts. so you need well above that to charge them, assuming they are in series.
It’s a complicated area. Yes, there is a risk of overcharging. And I don’t know the current output of the cells, or the type of battery, or how much sunlight you will be getting.
You should look up information on the charge characteristics on the batteries you have, and then measure the output current from your array and see how they match up.
Re the GPS, if it’s like mine, it charges via a USB connection, which means 5 volts 1 amp max, which is close to your 3 AA cells.
$25 would buy you a lot of disposable AA batteries.
