what gives wood its relatively high tensile strength? In diamond all atoms are bonded to each other.In rubber?

polymers are entangled in one another. How is it that molecules/cells that compose wood are bound together so tightly? They are not chemically bonded are they? is it same tangling polymer phenomenon? Thanks to all who help me understand!

Well – you can make the rubber also very hard. If you have normal rubber, it can stretch, because, there are just long chains, not bound together. But if you do vulcanisation – heating with the sulphur, the chains get bound together with the -S-S- bridges, and the material becomes harder. For example the material called ebonite with more than 40% sulphur is harder than ebony. There are many polymers, that are bridged – making a connections in all 3d space – and those are very hard – bakelite for example.

And that’s the answer for the wood – the chains are bound together with O-glycosilic bonds, making wood strong.
