Is my silicone gun good enough to fix a fish tank?

I’m buying a used fish tank that leaks from one corner. At the store, they sell a fish tank sealant that is just silicone, I think. At home, we got several rolls of silicone and one of those small guns that heat it to make crafts and other projects. My question is, is this type of silicone good enough to fix the tank or do I need to buy the “special” stuff from the pet store? Somebody told me that silicone is just silicone, and they name it something else just to overprice it. How true is this?

No, the pet store stuff is WAY overpriced, your right to want to look elsewhere to buy it. The Big tube They sell at any home improvement store is what you want.

Silicone is NOT just silicone, Silicone used for windows and Home applications contains Other compounds and ruberizers besides silicon that are DEADLY to fish.
Even 100% silicone marked tubes may not always have just 100% silicone and be Non-Toxic to fish. The only one that I would Recommend using is (G.E. Silicone I) that is 100% pure silicone based and safe to use in fish tanks. Also make sure your don’t buy the kinda that “Prevents Mold” or has any kind of antibacterial agents in it. Those agents (although great for home use) will kill fish.

The price of those little tubes at the pet store are ridiculous, that part is true, but still only a few company’s make silicone that is safe for fish. A tube of that Silicone (which is enough to seal 5 tanks) and the metal applicator plus a grout squeegee (to make the silicone even) will run you about $8 dollars or so.

Its also worth noting that most home Improvement stores also sell those little tube of aquarium sealant, just he same as the pet store, for half the price.

If you have a leak in one corner its advisable to Reseal the whole tank now, just in case another part weakens later.
